Finance manager jailed for stealing £300k from YMCA

Wednesday 20th March, 2024

A former finance manager who stole hundreds of thousands of pounds from his charity employer has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Over six year period he stole in excess of £300,000 from the YMCA in Port Talbot where he worked, leaving the charity at risk of bankruptcy. This YMCA has also lost its charitable status and dozens of staff could be made redundant.

He purportedly stole the money by transferring funds directly into his bank account, withdrawing cash on the YMCA credit card, forging signatures on cheques, and creating invoices from companies for work supposedly done for the organisation.

According to a report on ITV News, Philpin spent the funds on holidays, jewellery, home renovations and rare vinyl records.

Detective Constable Annie Rees said: “This was a long term-fraud which has had devastating consequences on not just a local charity, but also those employed by the charity and those who rely on its services.”
