Turmoil at OpenAI as CEO in Shock Dismissal

Monday 20th November, 2023

The future of OpenAI, the company that pioneered the groundbreaking ChatGPT AI functionality remains uncertain after the shock dismissal of CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman.

While the decision to fire Altman is unclear, many have speculated on potential disputes around the future growth and premise of the company and whether that remains true to the company's founding ethos.

The shock removal has plunged what many consider to be the most disruptive technology since the iPhone into crisis. In a move to force the Board to resign, it's been reported that more than 90% of staff have threatened to resign and join Microsoft (after a series of investments the company owns 49% of OpenAI).

After initially appointing CTO, Mira Murati as CEO, a day later, the Board appointed co-founder of Twitch, Emmett Shear as Interim CEO.

Sam Altman, meanwhile has taken up a position at Microsoft, heading up new Advanced AI team.

22nd November update: Sam Altman set to return as CEO, with restructure of the Board as part of the deal.
