Finance boss jailed for £2 million fraud at Brighton University
Thursday 16th March, 2023
A finance boss who stole over £2million from his employer over a 30-year period has been jailed for six years.
In the trusted role of Head of Income and Payment at Brighton University he covered up his crimes by making fraudulent entries into the university’s accounts. He spent the money on fine dining and holidays.
After the university reported the crime to police in November 2021, an investigation uncovered a series of complex financial cover-ups carried out over a period of 30 years.
According to an impact statement from the university, staff in the finance department had been put under extra pressure and workload in the wake of the investigation. It described the feeling of fear staff felt and an “atmosphere of suspicion”, with some unable to sleep.
A confiscation process to recoup some of the money will start later this year.
