Friday 13th January, 2023

A financial controller who defrauded his employer of more than half a million pounds has been ordered to pay back £220k at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

He worked for SP Services a firm that supplies medical and safety equipment for the armed services, NHS, public services. As a trusted employee he held the position for around 10 years, with responsibilities for overseeing the financial accounting for the company.

In October 2017 he was suspended from his post following an unconnected allegation.

Whilst on suspension he was asked to carry out a pay roll run under close supervision. It was during this process that discrepancies were noted and the fraud was uncovered. An investigation found that the defendant had systematically stolen £443,887.00.

He admitted stealing from his employer and on 25th March, 2019 at Shrewsbury Crown Court and pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of authority.

Following this he was ordered by pay compensation to the former owner of SP Services of £220,077.47 during November 2022.

Detective Inspector Emma Wright, of the Economic Crime Unit, said: “A confiscation order imposed, means he must pay the victim back £220,077.47, or face time in prison.

“Furthermore, should he be found to have further assets in the future, he will be required to pay these back, until the total amount of £553,120.50 has been satisfied.”
