Finance Manager stole £1.3 million from employer

Monday 7th November, 2022

A finance manager who stole more than £1.3 million from the small family business she worked for has been sentenced to five years in prison.

She made the fraudulent payments whilst working at Eiran Civil Engineering as a finance manager. The stolen money was used to support her luxury lifestyle which included purchasing expensive holidays, cars and clothes.

She had worked for the firm since June 2012 up until she resigned in January this year, shortly before the fraud came to light. During these nine years, analysis of company accounts show that she had stolen £1,315,143 in total.

She duplicated invoices in the name of a legitimate supplier but changed the bank details so she could pay herself.

Anita Lane, an employee at the company told the court: "She said Smith's treatment of the family caused her "huge" distress, adding: "I do not go out socially anymore. I keep myself to myself."

Ms Lane and the accountant realised that the payment had gone to Smith under the name of the oil supplier. After further investigation, the fraud was revealed
