Accountant jailed for £250k fraud

Friday 3rd December, 2021

An accountant has been jailed for a £250,000 fraud that pushed his employer a small family run language school to fold.

While employed at Devon School of English, he created false payments to siphon off the cash over a six-year period, that started in 2011.

Prior to the fraud the company had been run successfully for almost 50 years by the same family. The company had organised educational holidays for tens of thousands of children over the years.

Exeter Crown Court heard 19 jobs were lost when the company folded.

In a victim statement he read out in court, former principal Paul Hawthorne said: "He betrayed all those around him with no regard to the hardship he caused.”

Mr Jonathan Anders, defending, said the fraud was out of character and committed when Perry was in an unhappy marriage. BBC reported.
