Belgium plans to mandate B2B e-invoicing

Tuesday 23rd November, 2021

The Minister of Finance of Belgium, Mr Van Peteghem has confirmed in his policy note the intention to make B2B electronic invoicing mandatory on a countrywide basis.

The measure is aimed at reducing the country’s VAT gap which is the difference between the expected VAT revenues and the VAT revenues that are effectively collected.

A working group on e-invoicing was only set up in the spring. The project in an early phase and the e-invoicing mandate roll-out timings are not available yet.

Over the past couple of years, the Belgian government has also been embracing the PEPPOL framework when making e-invoicing mandatory for certain business-to-government (B2G) supplies of goods or services. According to PwC.

Many EU countries including, France and Poland have already announced that e-invoicing will become mandatory in the next couple of years.
